President: Opening of European Parliament Office in Chișinău to help align national legislation with European standards
The opening of the European Parliament Office in Chișinău will help the Republic of Moldova align national legislation with European standards. President Maia Sandu made the statement today during a press conference held alongside President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, who is visiting our country.
Maia Sandu explained that about 3,000 European acts are to be transposed into over 1,000 national acts.
“The opening of the European Parliament's liaison office in Chișinău will help us align national legislation with European standards. We are talking about approximately 3,000 European acts that are to be transcribed into over 1,000 national acts. It is an enormous effort, and the support of the European Parliament will make this process clearer, more efficient, and well-coordinated. We are grateful for this consistent partnership,” stated Maia Sandu.
Roberta Metsola stated that the opening of the European Parliament's liaison office in Chișinău is the best way to support our country in its European path and to support the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
“It is truly a long-term commitment. We want to deliver results. We will listen to you, hear you, and continue to support you in your path toward EU membership,” said the European official.
Additionally, Roberta Metsola emphasized that the decision to open the office in Chișinău was unanimously adopted by the European Parliament.
“When we see that we have a candidate country advancing so rapidly, efficiently, and consistently towards Europe, we do everything in our power to help this country. And our presence here is a clear signal for the Eastern Partnership, for your country, that we will continue to work on legislative approximation, that we have truly made certain commitments for cooperation. I am delighted to see that you have a new committee for European integration in Parliament. This opens up an enormous volume of opportunities for everything related to our collaboration, on security, on enlargement, on all thematic chapters, and it will allow us to work every day, shoulder to shoulder, on this journey. Until now, we relied on sporadic visits, which were very numerous and involved much support, but now we will be able to work here on the ground. This is our commitment, and we are very happy that we will be able to fulfill it,” remarked the President of the European Parliament.
The European Parliament Office in the Republic of Moldova officially launched its activity today. This announcement was made by the President of the EU legislative body, Roberta Metsola, in a speech delivered in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. Roberta Metsola presented the Agreement that provides for this action to the President of Parliament, Igor Grosu, describing it as a historic treaty that takes the partnership between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union to a higher level.
The decision to open an Eastern Partnership office in the Republic of Moldova was made by the European Parliament in March of this year. Currently, the European Parliament has three operational antenna offices: in New York for relations with the United Nations, in Jakarta for relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and in Addis Ababa for relations with the African Union.
Additionally, the European Parliament has liaison offices in all EU capitals, as well as regional offices in the five most populous member states and two offices outside the EU (in London and Washington).
