Moldova initiated bilateral screening with European Union on Chapter 27: Environment and Climate Change

The Republic of Moldova has officially started the bilateral screening process with the European Union on Chapter 27 – Environment and Climate Change, a crucial step in the EU accession negotiations.

This week, the delegation of the Ministry of Environment is in Brussels, where the analysis of one of the most complex chapters of the EU acquis is taking place, which includes over 200 European legislative acts and covers essential policies regarding nature protection, waste management, air and water quality, combating climate change, and public health.

During the opening session, Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu emphasized Moldova's progress in aligning with European standards and reaffirmed the authorities' commitment to green transition.

“We deeply appreciate the constant support of the European Union, including through our participation in the LIFE Programme and the implementation of Twinning and TAIEX projects. These have helped us build capacities, adopt best practices, and develop effective cross-border collaborations, including in areas such as combating environmental crimes and waste management. We look forward to continued support in identifying the necessary technical assistance and investments for the full transposition of the EU acquis,” Lazarencu stated.

During the five days of work, representatives of the Ministry of Environment will present the current status of adapting national legislation to EU norms and will detail the actions taken to modernize environmental infrastructure: waste collection and recycling, access to safe drinking water, biodiversity protection, hazardous chemical management, and developing early warning systems for natural disasters.

The Ministry of Environment thus aims to ensure a sustainable ecological transition, contributing not only to environmental protection but also to the well-being of citizens and the development of a green, resilient and competitive economy.

The start of the bilateral screening on Chapter 27 marks a key moment in Moldova's accession path, confirming the country’s firm commitment to a European future built on principles of sustainability, responsibility and solidarity.
