Moldovan president says high prices for energy, food products put to test even the strongest democracies

Chisinau, 5 July /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today gave a speech in the beginning of the 26th issue of the annual roundtable on up-to-date economic subjects, titled, Antitheses, Transformations, Achievements in a Changing World. The event is organized by The Economist publication in Athens, the presidential press service has reported.    
Among the principal subjects tackled by the head of state, there is the war in Ukraine and its social and economic consequences on the neighbour countries and the entire world; the need to rebuild the world  order based on the values of the humanity and on the observance of the international law; the importance to provide the people with a safe and peaceful environment, as a guarantee for the individual development of the societies.  
„I took advantage of this wide platform of discussions, in order to speak out, once again, for the ceasing of the war started by Russia against Ukraine – the greatest tragedy of this century, which we everybody experience in real time. I spoke about the solidarity proved by our fellow countrymen for the Ukrainian refugees and about the importance to remain united in continuation, at the level of country and at the level of Europe. This is the only way to resist to the economic, energy and security crises, which overwhelmed the entire continent,’’ President Maia Sandu said.      
The head of state noted that the high prices for energy and food products put to test even the strongest democracies. ‘’Urgent solutions are needed, in order to stop the galloping increase in prices, so that people should not have to choose between bread and freedom,’’ Maia Sandu said.    
„We are obliged to further support Ukraine – as no country, in the recent history, has suffered and has not sacrificed itself just as Ukraine does it -, to defend the democracy and stop the authoritarian tendencies. Our today’s actions will determine our future life,’’ Maia Sandu also said in Athens.
