Bavarian PM pledges support for Moldova’s European path: “Moldova must have a place in the European Union”

Prime Minister of the federal state of Bavaria Markus Söder has said that Moldova must have a place in the European Union and reaffirmed his support for the country’s European path. The German official stressed that Moldova has strategic importance for the region and praised the efforts of the Moldovan authorities in the process of European integration.

The PM of Bavaria today made statements to this effect at a joint press conference with President Maia Sandu. At the event, Markus Söder noted that Europe needs unity and strong partners.

“We need a strong and united Europe. Moldova is not the largest country, but it is an important one, because from a geostrategic point of view, it is in a position that gives it influence over the European Union and over the region,” said the Bavarian prime minister.

Markus Söder said that Moldova must continue reforms, in order to move closer to the European Union and noted that Bavaria supports accelerating this process, while respecting European criteria.

“We believe that Moldova must have a place in the European Union. We see that you are working very hard, very intensively and therefore, on Bavaria’s part, we advocate for these processes to be not only faster, but also very fair and just,” the German official underlined.

The Bavarian PM praised the progress made by Moldova in the fields of justice, policing and the strengthening of the rule of law.

“In the fields of justice, the police and the rule of law, we have very good cooperation with Moldova and there is a lot of visible progress. The society is developing very well and it is important that it wants to follow this path towards the European Union,” said Markus Söder.

At the same time, the German official announced that Bavaria intends to strengthen the economic cooperation with Moldova by creating a joint governmental commission that will examine opportunities in more sectors.

“We want to support you not only in the field of the rule of law, but also in the economy. We will create a joint governmental commission in which we will discuss the economy, agriculture and modern technologies,” Söder said.

According to him, Bavaria can offer expertise and support in such areas as investment, medicine and modern technologies for the development of joint projects.

“Our goal is to link Moldova as closely as possible to the European Union and we believe in the European future of Moldova,” concluded the prime minister of Bavaria. President Maia Sandu today in Chisinau is hosting Prime Minister of Bavaria Markus Söder, on his first visit to Moldova. Bavaria is Germany’s largest federal state by area and one of the strongest industrial economies in Europe.
