Moldovan parliament speaker says elections for People’s Assembly of Gagauzia scheduled for November 15, 2026
Elections for the People’s Assembly (local parliament) of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (UTA Gagauzia) will take place on November 15, 2026, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has said. The statement was made in the context of examining the draft law amending the Electoral Code, which sets the framework for organizing the ballot in the autonomous region and introduces new provisions for future electoral processes.
According to Igor Grosu, the authorities are waiting for the legislative amendments to enter into force, so that the electoral institutions can establish the calendar and all technical details of the electoral process.
“The elections are to take place on November 15. Now, the Central Electoral Commission is probably also waiting for the law to enter into force. That is why, we aim for it to be published in the Official Journal no later than September 1, and for the Commission to do the calculations, the countdown, to see whether they fit within the timeframe or not,” stated Igor Grosu.
The draft law amending the Electoral Code stipulates that the elections in the UTA Gagauzia will be organized on the basis of Moldova’s electoral legislation and the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia will be established according to the same rules applicable to the other electoral bodies of the country.
The draft law amending the Electoral Code was consulted with representatives of the People’s Assembly of the UTA Gagauzia. The discussions aimed to ensure institutional dialogue regarding the proposed legislative solutions for organizing and conducting elections in the autonomous region.
In drafting the document, the proposals put forward by the Central Electoral Commission following post-electoral assessments of the 2024 and 2025 ballots were taken into account, as well as the solutions needed to implement a decision by the Constitutional Court adopted in July 2026.
