Moldova marks 32 years since adoption of Constitution; Moldovan president described Supreme Law as legal, moral benchmark that guarantees citizens' rights, protects dignity

Moldova today is marking the 32nd anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution. On this occasion, President Maia Sandu emphasized that the Supreme Law represents “a true pact between generations – those who shaped the independence of the Republic of Moldova, consecrating our freedom, and those to whom we have the duty to leave as legacy a democratic, peaceful and prosperous country.”

The head of state underlined that, for more than three decades, the Constitution had been the country’s legal and moral benchmark, guaranteeing the Moldovans’ rights and protecting their dignity.

“The Fundamental Law reminds us that, regardless of the language we speak, the place where we live or the beliefs we hold, we share the same aspirations for our country: to live in freedom, with respect and mutual understanding,” Maia Sandu said.

The president noted that today the Supreme Law enshrines the citizens’ choice to build the future Moldova in the European Union.

“This is the direction we have chosen together and which we follow through our daily work. For our country, it is the only path by which we will be able to preserve peace and remain part of the free world,” Maia Sandu emphasized.

The Constitution of the Republic of Moldova was adopted on July 29, 1994, and entered into force on August 27 of the same year. The Supreme Law stipulates that the country is a sovereign, independent, unitary and indivisible state.

The Constitution is the fundamental law of the country, defining the attributes of the state, its operating principles and its main goals. It sets out the most important principles of economic, political, social and legal life, as well as the values on which the country is founded: the separation of powers in the state, the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, the independence of the judiciary and political pluralism. The Constitution is the legal basis of the entire body of legislation; the whole institutional and normative framework is grounded in it.

In 2024, the State Information Agency MOLDPRES (Public Institution) printed a new edition of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. The publication includes all amendments concerning the country’s European integration path, approved by the republican constitutional referendum of October 20, 2024, as well as the ones regarding the declaration of the Romanian language as the official state language.
