Moldovan electoral body to reprint ballots for polling station in Canada due to postal strike

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) will reprint ballots for a polling station in Ottawa, Canada. The decision was made today at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in light of a postal strike in the country.

According to CEC President Angelica Caraman, the postal strike could jeopardize the timely arrival of the ballot package.

“The Commission was informed of a situation regarding the postal operator in Canada that could jeopardize the timely arrival of the ballot package intended for polling station 38-12. This is about the national strike declared by the Canadian postal service. Therefore, to avoid the lack of ballots at the respective station, our colleagues from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are requesting the reprint of the batch intended for the polling station and its delivery via diplomatic courier to Canada. Consequently, it's necessary to revise the print run of ballots for the mentioned station,” Caraman said.

If the initially sent ballots are delivered by the opening of the polling station on September 28, the electoral office will record the total number of ballots received in the report.

“Election officials will make calculations based on the total number of 2,000 ballots. Additionally, if the initially sent ballots are delivered after the polling station has opened on September 28, the sealed box containing the ballots along with the set of electoral documents and materials will be returned to the CEC via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Caraman said.

The decision comes into effect upon adoption, is published on the official website of the Commission, and can be contested within three days at the Central Court of Appeal.

For the parliamentary elections on 28 September, 864,300 ballots were printed for the 297 polling stations abroad.
