Moldovan Foreign Affairs Ministry says Moldova watches with concern escalation of tensions in Middle East

Moldova is watching with concern the serious escalation of tensions in the Middle East, triggered by the worsening of the security situation amid military confrontations between Israel and Iran. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) has expressed its position in this respect, according to which recent developments run the risk of seriously hitting the regional stability and international security.

In the context, MAE said that Moldova joined the calls made by the international community for an immediate de-escalation of tensions.

“We join the calls made by the international community for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and urge all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and get involved in constructive dialogue aimed at diplomatic resolution of disputes,” the MAE emphasized.

The institution noted that “the safety of our citizens in the region is a priority for the Moldovan authorities, which continue to closely monitor the situation and coordinate necessary measures to protect them.”

At the same time, MAE added that Moldova supported international diplomatic efforts to restart the negotiation process on Iran's nuclear programme, in accordance with the commitments undertaken within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as essential pillars of the global non-proliferation regime of weapons of mass destruction within the international arms control regime.

On 13 June, Israel, claiming to have information proving that Iran is approaching the “point of no return” towards the atomic bomb, launched an unprecedented scale attack on Iranian territory, hitting over 200 military and nuclear sites and killing senior officers, writes Agerpres. Iran, which denies pursuing nuclear weapons development, responded by launching dozens of missiles at Israel, stating that they targeted military installations. Most were intercepted by the Israeli army, but significant damage was recorded in the Tel Aviv area. On 14 June, Israel again bombed Iran's air defense systems and missile launchers.
