VIDEO // Opening of accession negotiations on Cluster 1 – Fundamental Values: Moldova honoring commitments

The accession negotiation process for the first cluster, “Fundamental Values,” was officially launched on Monday, 15 June, in Luxembourg during the Intergovernmental Conference Republic of Moldova – European Union.

Marilena Raouna, Deputy Minister for European Affairs of Cyprus described the decision as a major milestone in the European path of the Republic of Moldova and extended congratulations to the authorities and citizens for reaching this important stage.

“Today is a particularly important day for the Republic of Moldova and, at the same time, for the entire European Union. The opening of the ‘Fundamental Values’ Cluster marks a significant milestone in Moldova’s European journey,” stated Marilena Raouna.

According to her, behind every reform and every objective achieved stand the determination and work of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who have demonstrated in recent years a genuine commitment to European values.

EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Marta Kos called the moment an important one for the European path of the Republic of Moldova and stressed that the decision reflects the efforts made by the authorities in Chisinau in recent months.

The official noted that the Republic of Moldova is maintaining a good pace of reforms and benefits from unprecedented financial support from the European Union. Recalling her recent participation in the EU–Moldova Investment Conference in Chisinau, Marta Kos underlined that Brussels plans to invest over one billion euros in the economy of the Republic of Moldova.

“Our financial commitment and intention is to invest more than one billion euros in the Moldovan economy. This makes European integration a tangible reality for all Moldovans,” the European official said.

Marta Kos also issued an appeal to political forces and Moldovan society to jointly support the reform agenda.

“It is time for political parties, both the majority and the opposition, to come together to carry out reforms jointly. Society must also unite, because these reforms improve the lives of all Moldovans,” said the European Commissioner.

The decision to open accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova with the European Union for Cluster 1 – “Fundamental Values” represents a historic moment and turns the process of European integration into a concrete reality for citizens. The statement was made by Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Alexandru Munteanu after the Intergovernmental Conference of the Republic of Moldova in Luxembourg.

The head of the Executive thanked the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European institutions for the support granted to the Republic of Moldova, stressing that citizens’ expectations are linked not to the technical procedures of the negotiations, but to the European future of the country.

“In recent months I have travelled across the country and spoken with many people. Few of the discussions were about procedures or negotiation chapters, but almost all were about Europe. People hope that their future lies in Europe. That is why today’s decision matters so much to us,” said Alexandru Munteanu.

The Prime Minister stressed that the opening of negotiations for the “Fundamental Values” cluster marks the actual beginning of the accession process.

“The accession process is becoming real. It has started and it is moving forward. This is an important signal that the Republic of Moldova is honoring its commitments, and the European Union recognizes our achievements and rewards the progress made,” the official said.
