Moldova took part in EU debates on European Democracy Shield

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov took part in Luxembourg in a ministerial discussion dedicated to strengthening democratic resilience and combating disinformation in the states that are candidates for accession to the European Union.

The event took place on the sidelines of the meeting of the EU General Affairs Council and brought together ministers from the 27 EU member states, as well as representatives of candidate countries.

According to Cristina Gherasimov, participants exchanged views on ways to strengthen democracies by combating disinformation more effectively, protecting electoral processes, supporting independent media, and encouraging the active involvement of civil society in the decision-making process.

“Together with ministers from the 27 EU member states and those from the candidate states, we exchanged views on how we can join forces to combat disinformation more effectively, protect electoral processes, support independent media, and encourage the active participation of civil society in decision-making, so that our democracies remain strong,” said the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration.

The official noted that the discussions focused on the European Democracy Shield initiative, as well as on the measures needed to strengthen democratic resilience in states that are on the path to joining the European Union.

Cristina Gherasimov emphasized that in the process of European integration, strengthening democratic institutions, protecting the information space, and organizing free and fair elections are essential priorities for the Republic of Moldova.

The Republic of Moldova officially opened accession negotiations with the European Union on 25 June 2024, during the first Intergovernmental Conference Republic of Moldova – EU, held in Luxembourg.
