Cyprus welcomes opening of negotiations with Moldova
The opening of the accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union for Cluster 1 – Fundamental Values represents a historic moment both for our country and for the whole of Europe. The statement was made by Marilena Raouna, Deputy Minister for European Affairs of Cyprus, after the Intergovernmental Conference Republic of Moldova – European Union held in Luxembourg.
The Cypriot official described the decision as a major milestone in the European path of the Republic of Moldova and extended congratulations to the authorities and citizens for reaching this important stage.
“Today is a particularly important day for the Republic of Moldova and, at the same time, for the entire European Union. The opening of the ‘Fundamental Values’ Cluster marks a significant milestone in Moldova’s European journey,” said Marilena Raouna.
According to her, behind every reform and every objective achieved lies the determination and work of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who in recent years have demonstrated a genuine commitment to European values.
The Deputy Minister for European Affairs of Cyprus recalled her previous visit to the Republic of Moldova, where she had the opportunity to directly observe the resilience and perseverance of the population.
“Both in Chișinău and in localities across the country, I saw with my own eyes the strength and determination of the Moldovan people. I witnessed the genuine commitment to the European dream,” the official said.
Marilena Raouna underlined that this stage was made possible thanks to reforms carried out in key areas such as strengthening democratic institutions, promoting the rule of law, combating corruption and modernising public administration.
“In recent years, Moldova has demonstrated a clear commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and aligning itself with the values and standards of the European Union, all this under difficult conditions and in the face of external interference,” said the representative of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
She noted that, despite regional challenges and external pressures, the Republic of Moldova has remained steadfast in its European choice and has continued to advance with determination.
The official highlighted the importance of the “Fundamental Values” Cluster, considered the foundation of the entire accession process.
“The principles encompassed by this cluster represent the cornerstone on which the European Union is built. Progress in these areas strengthens not only Moldova’s path towards accession, but also citizens’ trust in state institutions and in their European future,” said Marilena Raouna.
According to her, the decision adopted in Luxembourg represents a recognition of the progress achieved by the Republic of Moldova and of the efforts made by the authorities, civil servants, experts, civil society and citizens.
“Today we acknowledge the considerable progress made by Moldova. We recognise the leadership, professionalism and dedication of all those who have contributed to this effort,” the official declared.
Marilena Raouna reiterated that the European Union’s enlargement process remains merit-based, and the next steps will depend on the continuation of reforms and the concrete results obtained.
“Today’s decision sends a clear message: dedication, perseverance and genuine commitment to European values are recognised and rewarded,” she said.
In her speech, the representative of Cyprus conveyed a powerful message of support for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
“Above all, this moment belongs to the people of Moldova. Their European aspirations, resilience in difficult times and belief in a democratic and prosperous future have been the driving force of this path. We stand by you. Your place is in Europe,” said Marilena Raouna.
The Intergovernmental Conference in Luxembourg marked the official opening of the accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova for Cluster 1 – Fundamental Values, considered the core of the European integration process and which includes areas such as the rule of law, the functioning of democratic institutions, justice reform, fundamental rights and combating corruption.
