Moldovan State University's swimming pool reopens following renovation

The swimming pool of the Moldovan State University (USM) will be reopened to the public starting from June 25, after two years of renovation and modernization works. The major repair cost approximately 18 million lei, of which 16.5 million lei was provided by the state. The pool will be available for students, sportspeople and all those who practice swimming.

The total investment in the renovation amounted to about 18 million lei. The Education and Research Ministry allocated 16.5 million lei, while the difference was covered from USM’s own resources. The modernization of the infrastructure will allow teaching activities, sports training sessions and community programmes to be carried out in modern conditions.

Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun emphasized that the project represented an important investment in the sports infrastructure of the capital.

“During the implementation of the project, the initial investment, estimated at 10 million lei, reached approximately 16 million lei. Nevertheless, I believe that every leu invested has fully proved its value. Today we have here, in the center of Chisinau, a modern sports infrastructure, built to state-of-the-art standards. We want this facility to be used primarily by students, for their professional training and for promoting a healthy lifestyle,” the minister said.

The pool has six swimming lanes and measures 25 by 16 meters. The modernization works were carried out, so that the infrastructure meets current standards for sportspeople’s training and for organizing sports competitions, including national and regional events.

USM Rector Otilia Dandara noted that the university aimed to promote not only education and research, but also an active lifestyle.

“A university must be not only a center of education and research, but also an example in promoting a healthy way of life. Through this project, we aim to contribute to the development of a more active, healthier community, better connected to the values of sport and education,” the rector stated.

For his part, the pool’s director, Vasile Cerbusca, pointed out that the main beneficiaries of the investment would be students and future specialists in physical education and sport.

“As the host of this event, we are of course glad that we achieved what we aimed for. Indeed, all of us wanted the State University to have its own sports center, because students are the main beneficiaries of this pool. It is meant for training specialists in the field and will also help promote the health of each resident of Chișinău who wishes to use it,” said the pool’s director, Vasile Cerbusca.

The sports complex has a history of over a century. The building was constructed in 1901 as part of the theological ensemble designed by Gavriil Banulescu-Bodoni and was later adapted for educational and sports activities. Over time, it has become one of the best-known training centers in the field of swimming and water sports of Moldova.
