Moldovan PM says criticism keeps any government more disciplined

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan says that the government he leads is open to criticism and that such criticism is essential for responsible governance, as long as it is accompanied by concrete solutions. At the same time, the PM notes that consolidated efforts are needed to unite society and deliver the results expected by citizens.

“I encourage everyone to criticize constructively, and I mean the press, civil society, the opposition. I believe that criticism keeps any government more disciplined. That is why, I encourage all criticism. I would like criticism to be constructive, where there are practical solutions and recommendations, especially on difficult, complex topics, such as tax reform, public administration reform, and reforms in the social sector. I would be very pleased, if criticism also came with solutions, so that we can have a debate focused on identifying solutions, not only on the problems,” said Vasile Tofan after the inauguration of the new government.

Referring to the debates in parliament during the examination of the new government’s work programme, Vasile Tofan said that they reflect the existing divisions in society, but he believes they can be overcome through dialogue and cooperation.

“I appreciated the discussions in parliament. I understand that the parliament is dominated by politicians. The parliament represents the divided society in which we live. I could hide in this cage of ‘we are good and others are bad’, but I prefer not to. I truly believe that we need sincere efforts to start uniting society. Because society is fragmented. Social networks contribute to this, as well as a lot of propaganda and disinformation, but also many legitimate concerns. That is why, I want to assure you that I do not believe in this idea that we must be in different camps and fight each other to the death. We must bring more unity into society,” the prime minister said.

Vasile Tofan emphasized that he intends to carry out his mandate to the end, which means until the autumn of 2029, when the next parliamentary elections are due.

The new cabinet of ministers, headed by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, today took the oath of office at the Presidency of Moldova, in front of Head of State Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.
