President of India arrives in Chisinau today, at invitation by Moldovan head of state
President of India Droupadi Murmu is paying an official visit to Moldova today, 20 July 2026, at an invitation by President Maia Sandu. This is the first visit by an Indian head of state to the country since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Moldova and India on March 20, 1992. Access to certain public places from the Chisinau municipality will be temporarily restricted between 07:00 and 22:00. The restrictions will affect the city center and the main traffic arteries connecting it with the airport.
The visit marks the opening of a new stage in the bilateral relations between the two states. During the meeting in Chisinau, Maia Sandu and Droupadi Murmu will discuss the state of the Moldovan–Indian relations and new areas of cooperation in such fields as trade, investment, energy, information technologies, the pharmaceutical industry, health, agriculture and education.
Maia Sandu and Droupadi Murmu will make press statements starting from 11:30. Afterwards, the two heads of state will take part in the opening of the Moldova–India Business Forum, organized by the Investments Agency. The event will bring together representatives of the business communities from both countries, including an Indian delegation made up of approximately 30 businesspeople.
The visit’s agenda also includes a meeting of the President of India with Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, as well as a meeting with the Indian community of Moldova.
The relations between Moldova and India have recorded positive developments in recent years. In October 2024, in New Delhi, bilateral political consultations between the two countries were resumed after a 21-year break. In December 2024, Moldova inaugurated its Embassy in New Delhi, and in February 2025, India opened its market to Moldovan apples.
Another important element of the bilateral relationship is cooperation in the field of education. More than 1,400 students from India are studying at universities of Moldova, most of them at the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
India, with a population of over 1.4 billion inhabitants, is one of the largest economies in the world and one of the most dynamic major economies. The country is an increasingly important strategic partner for Moldova.
