Priorities of Moldova's culture minister: European models, support for artists, solution for National Philharmonic

The Culture Ministry aims to capitalize on the experience and best practices of the European Union, in order to modernize the cultural sector, and identifying a solution for the future of the National Philharmonic is among its priorities. Culture Minister Dan Suruceanu today made statements to this effect, after the inauguration of the new government.

The official said that one of the main directions of his mandate would be the continuation of projects already initiated and the development of new policies adapted to the process of Moldova’s accession to the European Union.

“Culture is an extremely diverse field, and at the ministry level, we will have to ensure the continuity of the projects and policies that have already been initiated. At the same time, we will develop new policies, harnessing the opportunities offered by the process of Moldova’s accession to the European Union. We will adopt good European practices and tools built on long-standing experience and expertise, in order to adapt and implement them in Moldova. Our goal is for these policies to bring benefits to culture, to citizens and to all those who work in this field,” said Dan Suruceanu.

Referring to the future of the Serghei Lunchevici National Philharmonic, the minister noted that the institution stayed a priority.

“At this moment, I cannot say with certainty what the next steps will be regarding the National Philharmonic. I have also seen in the public space a very beautiful project, but we know it is an expensive one. We will evaluate all options and the existing situation, and as soon as we have a clear solution regarding the future of the National Philharmonic, we will make it public,” Suruceanu said.

At the same time, the new minister stressed that the experience he had  accumulated in the field of heritage and the management of cultural institutions would help him in carrying out his mandate.

“I worked at the National Art Museum between 1992 and 1996, going through all professional stages, from laboratory assistant to deputy director for scientific activity. This experience gave me an in-depth understanding of the museum sector and cultural heritage. Over the years, I have gained experience in more areas related to culture, and in the last three years, at the Chisinau Arena, I have had the opportunity to get to know the artistic sector closely,” the minister added.

The new cabinet of ministers, led by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, today took the oath of office at the Presidency of Moldova, in the presence of Head of State Maia Sandu and the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu. The ceremony took place after, on July 21 evening, the parliament had given a vote of confidence to the Tofan government and approved the governing programme, European Economy, Efficient State.
