VIDEO // Moldovan foreign affairs minister says Indian President’s visit opens new chapter in relations between Moldova and India

Acting Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi has welcomed President of India Droupadi Murmu to Chisinau. The visit opens a new chapter in the relations between the two states.

The Moldovan diplomacy head extended a warm welcome to the President of India, who is paying her first official visit to Moldova.

“This is a visit that opens a new chapter in the relations between Moldova and India,” Mihai Popsoi said.

According to the foreign affairs minister, the discussions focused on opportunities for cooperation between the two countries and on projects that can be developed for the benefit of citizens and the business community.

“We have numerous areas in which we can cooperate, such as trade and investment, agriculture, education, healthcare, information technology and energy,” the minister noted.

The Moldova–India Business Forum, which takes place in Chisinau today and brings together business representatives from both countries, plays an important role in strengthening economic relations.

“It will contribute to attracting investment and increasing trade exchanges,” Mihai Popsoi underlined.

He stressed that India is an important partner for Moldova. “I am convinced that this visit will give new impetus to cooperation between our countries and will bring concrete results for the citizens of Moldova and India,” the deputy PM  concluded.

The relations between Moldova and India have witnessed positive developments in recent years. In October 2024, in New Delhi, bilateral political consultations between the two countries were resumed after a 21-year break. In December 2024,  Moldova inaugurated its Embassy in New Delhi, and in February 2025, India opened its market to Moldovan apples.

Another important element of the bilateral relationship is cooperation in the education field. More than 1,400 students from India are studying at universities of Moldova, most of them at the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

India, with a population of over 1.4 billion inhabitants, is one of the world’s largest economies and one of the most dynamic major economies. This country represents a strategic partner of growing importance for Moldova.
