On eve of election campaign, CSM issued statement urging all political actors to act responsibly

The Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) issued a public statement today expressing its concern over recent statements by some political actors targeting the judicial system in the Republic of Moldova. Council urged all political actors to act responsibly, especially on the eve of the electoral campaign.

The Superior Council of Magistracy announces that it “took note with concern of several recent public statements made by various political actors, which contain explicit messages of intimidation and pressure on judges, as well as promises to purge the judicial system in the event of a change in government.”

“Such statements cannot be treated with indifference in a rule of law state. The Council stresses that the independence of the judiciary is non-negotiable and cannot be subordinated to electoral cycles or party interests, regardless of who is temporarily in power,” the statement reads.

CSM reiterates that judges are legally obliged to obey only the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Moldova, not the will of any political actor, regardless of affiliation.

“Veiled or direct threats of expelling magistrates from the system on political grounds represent a severe form of pressure, which undermines public confidence in fair and impartial justice,” the statement says.

In the context of the upcoming electoral campaign, the CSM calls for responsibility, restraint, and respect for the independence of the judicial system. The institution warns that any attempt to publicly intimidate judges will be documented and strongly condemned.
