12th Legislature Parliament established

The deputies elected in the parliamentary elections on September 28 convened today for the first session of the Parliament of the 12th Legislature to officially constitute the Legislative, elect the president and vice-presidents of the legislative body, as well as the members of the standing bureau. The session was chaired by the deputy dean of age, Zinaida Greceanîi, former speaker.

At the opening of the session, Greceanîi said:

“I note that the session of the Parliament of the 12th Legislature meets the necessary quorum and is deliberative. Parliament does not represent a single party but the entire society. I urge you to exercise your mandate responsibly.”

Subsequently, the president of the Constitutional Court, Domnica Manole, presented the report on the election results and the validation of the elected deputies' mandates.

“The Constitutional Court has cemented the sovereign will of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and opened the way to the full exercise of the newly-elected Parliament's mandate. Your mandate is the direct expression of the people's will, and the mission that befalls you is of great dignity and responsibility,” said Manole.

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu delivered a speech in plenary, emphasizing the mission of the Legislative and the deputies:

“We are at the beginning of a journey—in a newly-elected Parliament entrusted by the citizens with the country's fate for the next four years, but above all, entrusted with the mission to maintain peace in Moldova. It is a beginning that carries the hopes and trust of the people, as well as the duty to meet their expectations.”

After the head of state's speech, the deputies took a technical break.

Following the festive part of the session, the deputies are to form parliamentary factions within 10 days, elect the Parliament's president and vice-presidents, establish the composition of the standing bureau, and decide on the formation of standing committees.

Following the elections on September 28, five political formations exceeded the electoral threshold: Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) – 55 seats; Patriotic Bloc – 26 seats; Alternative Bloc – 8 seats; Our Party – 6 seats; Democracy at Home Party – 6 seats.
