Republic of Moldova and Cyprus seek to deepen interparliamentary cooperation

The Republic of Moldova and Cyprus aim to deepen interparliamentary cooperation and harness opportunities for exchanging experience, including in the European integration process. The topics were discussed by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi and President of Cypriot House of Representatives Annita Demetriou.

The meeting held today in Nicosia focused on bilateral relations, the priorities on the Republic of Moldova’s European agenda, and strengthening cooperation between the legislatures of the two countries.

The officials welcomed the dialogue between the parliaments and highlighted the role of the Parliamentary Friendship Group between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Cyprus in developing relations and facilitating interinstitutional contacts. In this context, the parties expressed interest in harnessing the potential for cooperation and intensifying the exchange of experience.

An important topic of the discussions concerned the Republic of Moldova’s European path and Cyprus’s support for advancing the negotiations on accession to the European Union.

Mihai Popșoi thanked the Cypriot authorities for supporting the Republic of Moldova’s European aspirations, as well as for their willingness to share best practices on European integration and aligning national legislation with the acquis communautaire.

For her part, Annita Demetriou reaffirmed Cyprus’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union, stressing that our country can continue to rely on Cypriot solidarity throughout this process.

Popșoi is paying an official visit to the Republic of Cyprus on October 26–27, at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart. This is the first bilateral visit by a foreign minister of the Republic of Moldova to Cyprus in the past 15 years.
