President Maia Sandu held bilateral meetings today in Budapest with Hungarian President András Baka and Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The discussions focused on the Republic of Moldova’s European path, economic and energy cooperation, and regional security.

The officials welcomed the opening this year of four clusters of negotiating chapters and discussed the next steps for opening the remaining two. They also reaffirmed that the enlargement of the European Union is an investment in the security of the entire Union.

On the economic front, the President welcomed the presence of Hungarian companies in the Republic of Moldova and encouraged new investments. They also discussed energy cooperation, including the diversification of energy sources and regional interconnection, as well as the expansion of direct air links between Chișinău and Budapest.

The discussions also addressed regional security, including Ukraine’s resistance and Russia’s hybrid threats, including repeated violations of the Republic of Moldova’s airspace by Russian drones and missiles.

The Republic of Moldova and Hungary signed a strategic partnership declaration in 2020. It provides for Hungary’s support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, regular political dialogue at all levels, and cooperation in the fields of economics, energy, security, education, and culture.

This is President Maia Sandu’s first visit to Hungary. The President is in Budapest at the invitation of Prime Minister Péter Magyar to participate in events marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 anti-communist revolution. Yesterday, alongside several heads of state and government, the President attended the solemn session of the Hungarian National Assembly and the commemorative ceremony in Kossuth Square.
