PM: Commissioning Chișinău power substation to reduce risk of blackout

Commissioning Chișinău power substation and energizing Vulcănești–Chișinău line will reduce the risk of major electricity outages and strengthen the Republic of Moldova’s energy independence. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan made the statement during Raport podcast, where he said that the authorities had already received the contractor’s request to establish the substation acceptance committee.

“It is important to commission Chișinău substation on time, which will allow us to energize Vulcănești–Chișinău line and no longer depend on a route that passes through Ukraine and the Transnistrian region. I believe this is an important step toward our energy independence,” Vasile Tofan said.

The prime minister noted that commissioning the substation by December 31 is one of the measures included in the reform agenda.

“Indeed, it is one of the measures included in the reform agenda. We have until December 31 to fulfill it. If we fail to do so, we will indeed lose 15 million euros, but I am fully confident that we will meet this objective,” the official said.

Vulcănești–Chișinău overhead power line is approximately 157 kilometers long and connects the 400 kV power substation in Vulcănești with the 330 kV substation in Chișinău. The project will enable electricity to be transmitted from Romania and the European market to the central part of the country without routing it through Cuciurgan Power Plant energy hub in the Transnistrian region. According to the Ministry of Energy, the line will be able to carry more than 50% of the Republic of Moldova’s electricity consumption. The project, worth approximately 61 million euros, is financed by the World Bank Group.
