President attends commemoration in Budapest marking 70th anniversary of 1956 anti-communist revolution
President Maia Sandu attended yesterday in Budapest events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Hungary’s anti-communist revolution. Several heads of state and government participated in the commemoration, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. The President is in Hungary at the invitation of Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
“In October 1956, Hungarians took to the streets to demand their freedom and the right to decide their own fate, without dictates from Moscow. We, too, lived under the same domination, which is why the Hungarians’ ideal of freedom from 1956 is close to our hearts,” Maia Sandu said.
The program included a solemn session of the National Assembly of Hungary and a commemoration ceremony in Kossuth Square. The President of Hungary, András Baka, hosted a luncheon in honor of the heads of state attending the commemoration.
Today Maia Sandu will hold bilateral meetings with President András Baka and Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
This is President Maia Sandu’s first visit to Hungary. In 2020, the two countries signed a strategic partnership declaration providing for Hungary’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union, regular political dialogue at all levels, and cooperation in the economic, energy, security, education and cultural fields.
