Environment minister says water quality improves in north Moldova settlements

The quality of water in localities in north Moldova has improved. Recent laboratory analyses confirm the restoration of safety standards for water from the Dniester River. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder presented information to this effect today evening.

The official emphasized that the laboratory analyses confirmed that field interventions are effective and are bringing positive developments.

“Work teams stay mobilized 24/7 and will continue operations in the coming days. At present, we are carefully examining the latest laboratory tests and will soon return with new recommendations for the population, adapted to the situation on the ground. We remain committed to citizens’ safety and will communicate transparently every stage of the monitoring process until the situation is definitively resolved,” said Gheorghe Hajder.

The authorities of Moldova today raised the alert level in the northern area of the country, after laboratory analyses indicated that the admissible limits of certain polluting substances in the Dniester River water had been exceeded.

At the same time, the National Crisis Management Center ruled to create a crisis cell made up of specialists from national institutions and experts from neighboring countries.

Additionally, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu requested, through the Interior Ministry, the activation of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

The problem arose following a Russian attack on a hydropower plant in Ukraine. As a result, an oil-based substance reached the Dniester’s waters and continues to move downstream.
