European Union supports work of Moldovan journalists to ensure all citizens have access to objective information

The Republic of Moldova continues to strengthen its position on the map of European democracies through notable progress in the field of freedom of expression. At a time when access to verified information is vital, the media in our country demonstrates increased resilience in the face of global challenges, the EU Delegation to Chisinau notes.

Rise in the World Press Freedom Index

According to the latest report published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Republic of Moldova has climbed to 31st place in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index. This represents significant progress compared to the previous year, when the country ranked 35th, confirming the trend of alignment with international transparency standards. The importance of this progress is underlined by the essential role that a free press plays in society:

Protection of human rights: Independent media acts as a guarantor of fundamental freedoms.

Strengthening security: Information transparency is the foundation of a safer and fairer society.

Supporting democracy: Objective journalism shapes a peaceful future and offers citizens reliable reference points.

European support for quality journalism

The European Union remains a strategic partner in this process, actively supporting the work of journalists so that objective information is accessible to all citizens. The message from external partners is clear: independent journalism is not just a source of information, but a pillar of a strong democracy.

“In a world in which the speed of information is unprecedented, the progress made by the Republic of Moldova reconfirms that truth and freedom of expression remain national priorities on the path to European integration,” summarizes the EU Delegation to Chisinau.

World Press Freedom Day (3 May) was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1993 at the initiative of UNESCO. The date marks the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration (1991), a document that supports a free, independent and pluralistic press. The main goals of the event are to promote freedom of expression as a fundamental right; to assess the state of press freedom worldwide; to defend media independence; and to commemorate journalists who have died on duty.
