Moldova modernizes Register of road accidents, aligns it with EU standards

Moldova is set to establish a State Register of road accidents, aimed at streamlining the collection, analysis and management of data on accidents occurring on the country’s territory. A draft government decision to this effect has been developed by Interior Ministry and was approved by the cabinet of ministers today.

According to the document, the information system will enable a unified record of road accidents, including those resulting in bodily injuries or loss of life. The authorities say that this measure is necessary both for modernizing internal processes and for aligning Moldova with European Union standards in the context of the accession process.

The Register will facilitate the exchange of data with EU member states concerning serious accidents, thereby contributing to the analysis of accident trends and to the development of more effective road accident prevention policies.

The system will also integrate information provided by multiple institutions, including the General Police Inspectorate, medical and sanitary institutions, local public authorities and law courts.

According to the authors, the current regulatory framework is outdated and no longer meets the present technological needs. Although the system is already used by police officers for documenting accidents, the draft decision provides for its update and regulation in a new format.

The Register will be integrated with more government digital platforms, such as MCloud, MConnect, MSign and MPass, as well as with other relevant state registers.

The Interior Ministry specifies that the implementation of the draft will not require additional funds from the state budget, with the annual costs for the development and maintenance of the system estimated at around 340–350 thousand lei, resources already allocated in the institution’s budget.

Following the approval of the new government decision, the current regulation on the Register of road accidents will be repealed.
