Moldovan defense minister in Brussels says country aspires defense system aligned with European security architecture

Moldova reaffirms its strong commitment to align its national defense system with the European security and defense architecture. Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii  made statements to this effect during a meeting of the European Parliament's Security and Defense Committee (SEDE), held in Brussels today.

The official highlighted the increasingly complex security challenges faced by Moldova, particularly mentioning hybrid threats and foreign interference with  democratic processes.

"Moldova is not facing a conventional war, but a hybrid war," said Nosatii, emphasizing such dangers as disinformation, cyberattacks and energy blackmail.

The minister highlighted the Security and Defense Partnership signed between Moldova and the European Union one year ago, which represents an essential framework for strengthening bilateral cooperation.

He also asked for EU’s support for developing defense and security capabilities, particularly in the fields of cyber, strategic communication and countering hybrid threats.

Anatolie Nosatii thanked for the support provided through the European Peace Facility (EPF), which enabled the modernization of Moldovan defense forces.

"Since 2021 until now, the EU has approved a total of 197 million euros in assistance for strengthening the defense capabilities of Moldova, which is the second largest beneficiary of this instrument. This support has improved military mobility, operational capabilities and enhanced national resilience in the face of current hybrid challenges," the minister stated.

At the same time, he highlighted the active role of the National Army in international peace-keeping missions, participating in EU Common Security and Defense Policy operations, such as EUFOR ALTHEA in Bosnia & Herzegovina and the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM).

"We are ready to expand our participation in other international peace-keeping operations," Nosatii added.

In conclusion, the minister emphasized that the experience of Moldova proved that resilience, democracy and security can be strengthened through effective tools, coordination and solid partnerships.

The Defense Minister's visit to Brussels took place at the invitation of the SEDE Chair, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
