Experience exchange in radioactive waste management
The Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Turkmenistan are strengthening the cooperation in the radioactive waste management through an experience exchange organized on June 23-27, 2025. The visit of the Turkmen delegation, designated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is hosted by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU).
According to the IGSU, during the visit, the Inspectorate's specialists, together with representatives from the National Agency for Regulation of Nuclear and Radiological Activities present the Moldovan national system for radioactive waste management. Additionally, information is provided about the applicable legal framework and the functioning of specialized installations in the country.
The program also includes technical visits to radioactive waste management facilities, aimed at transferring best practices concerning environmental protection and public safety.
Representatives from Turkmenistan presented their own system for radioactive waste management, opening up opportunities for a bilateral dialogue on the methods and technologies used in both countries.
Moreover, topics related to international cooperation, ongoing projects, and prospects for new initiatives regarding the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and environmental remediation were discussed.
