Moldovan driver's licenses to be recognized in two more European states

Driver's licenses issued in the Republic of Moldova will be recognized in Italy and Latvia.

The recognition and conversion will apply to license holders who have permanent residency in the territory of either party.

In this regard, the government today approved the signing of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of the Italian Republic on the mutual recognition of driver's licenses for conversion purposes.

Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin stated that the Agreement will apply to holders of driver's licenses who have permanent residency in either of the two parties' territories and will contribute to the quick and simplified exchange of the driver's license without additional exams. Additionally, the initiative will facilitate the mobility of citizens of the Republic of Moldova and the Italian Republic, contributing to increased road safety, strengthening bilateral relations in transport and internal affairs.

“A very important project for our citizens living in Italy. We continue this trend of having as many such agreements as possible with the countries where our citizens reside,” said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers also approved the Agreement with Latvia on the recognition and conversion of driver's licenses, drafted in Riga, on May 19, 2025.

Daniella Misail-Nichitin mentioned that the Agreement concerns mutual recognition for the exchange of non-temporary and valid driver's licenses issued by the competent authorities of both states, in accordance with the national legislation of each party.

“The Agreement will apply to license holders who have permanent residency in the territory of one of the parties and will contribute to a better and faster simplified procedure for exchanging the driver's license, will facilitate the mobility of citizens of the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Latvia and will ensure a clear and efficient legal framework for the conversion of driver's licenses. The Agreement constitutes a necessary tool to guarantee the rights of citizens of both states,” the Minister of Internal Affairs said.

The Republic of Moldova has signed agreements in this regard with Israel, Turkey, Albania, Spain, Lithuania, and Greece. A similar document has been signed with France, which is yet to come into effect. Additionally, a joint declaration of intent regarding the transcription of driver's licenses has been signed with Germany.
