Marculesti Airport of Moldova to be transformed into passenger, cargo hub
The Marculesti Airport is set to be modernized, in order to handle both cargo transport flights and commercial passenger flights. The members of the parliament’s commission for economy, budget and finance examined a draft law to this effect today.
The draft proposes transferring the Marculesti Airport under the management of the State Enterprise Chisinau International Airport, in order to achieve better coordination of activities and necessary investments for modernization.
Preliminary estimates suggest that about 4.2 million euros is needed to adapt the airport to the requirements for operating passenger flights.
According to the project, the rehabilitation of the Marculesti Airport represents an efficient solution for diversifying the airport infrastructure and for developing the northern region of the country, in the context of increased demand for air transport services, especially from low-cost carriers.
The Marculesti Airport is located approximately 150 kilometers far from Chisinau and has a runway with a load-bearing capacity higher than the one of the Chisinau International Airport, making it suitable for operating large-capacity aircraft.
