New contingent of National Army deployed to Kosovo
The 22nd contingent of the National Army has been deployed for the peacekeeping mission in the Western Balkans. Attending the military ceremony, Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi emphasized that by participating in international missions, Moldova proves it is not just a security consumer but actively contributes to peacekeeping and promoting democratic values. The minister wished the servicemen good luck and urged them to stay in touch with their relatives.
In a region marked by interethnic tensions and post-conflict scenarios, Moldovan soldiers of the 22nd contingent will contribute to ensuring stability in Kosovo and will also improve interoperability. According to Nosatîi, this mission not only strengthens security in the Balkans but also reflects Moldova's commitment to peace and international cooperation.
'It is an event marking Moldova's contribution to maintaining peace and security, a moment proving the level of preparation, professionalism, and interoperability tested and proved over the years. Thus, the National Army demonstrates that Moldova has defense forces capable of fulfilling missions both domestically and abroad. This is also a message that Moldova is not only a security consumer but an active contributor in promoting democratic values, maintaining peace where the most vulnerable part of the civil society needs protection,' he said.
The minister thanked partner states Italy and the USA for providing logistical assistance in training Moldovan peacekeepers. Moldova's participation in international peacekeeping missions occurs in commands assigned to Italy.
'I am honored to be able to greet you on your departure to Kosovo. For ten years, Moldova has contributed with determination and commitment to the success of this important peacekeeping mission. Your professionalism and the level of interoperability have contributed to making Moldova a highly respected Euro-Atlantic partner. The experience gained in KFOR has allowed Moldova to participate successfully in UN and EU missions,' Lorenzo Tomassoni, Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Moldova said.
Justin Suni, acting Head of NATO Liaison Office in Moldova said that multinational interoperability is one of the components of the success of NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, and Moldovan soldiers have always stood out for their professionalism, commitment and dedication.
To face the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, Moldovan soldiers underwent rigorous training and selection. For six months, 41 soldiers, including seven sappers, one staff officer and a platoon of 33 infantrymen will carry out security and military objective protection missions and patrol the area of responsibility.
Over recent decades, soldiers of the National Army, along with soldiers from other states have consistently contributed to strengthening peace and security in the Western Balkans region within the KFOR mission. Moldovan peacekeepers, consisting of infantry and engineering troops, have honed their professional skills while part of a contingent of 4,500 soldiers from 27 allied and partner countries.
