UTM's Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology modernized

The Technical University of Moldova (UTM) inaugurated the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology today, following extensive modernization work, marking a decisive step towards strengthening national scientific research.

The renovation project worth 11 million lei included major repairs of the spaces, equipping the laboratories with high-performance equipment and modern microscopes, purchasing furniture and modernizing the IT infrastructure. A state-of-the-art communications network was implemented to meet the current requirements of research and education. The work took two years, and now the 44 researchers and 9 auxiliary staff benefit from conditions that meet international standards.

Present at the inauguration ceremony, UTM Rector Viorel Bostan emphasized that the investment strengthens Moldova's position on the world science map.

“Investment in research is not just a strategic priority for the Technical University of Moldova, but also a long-term responsibility. We are committed to continuing research and achieving new discoveries that bring international recognition to the Republic of Moldova,” Bostan highlighted.

Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun stressed the importance of this project for the future of national science.

“The modernization of the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology represents an investment in the future of research. Moldovan researchers must have access to modern conditions to harness their potential and contribute to the country’s progress,” the Minister of Education said.

Ion Tighineanu, President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (AŞM) highlighted the impact on innovation capabilities.

“The Institute has a valuable tradition in the research. Its modernization provides solid premises for new scientific discoveries and proves that science is becoming a national priority,” said the head of AŞM.

According to Government Decision no. 485 of 13 July 2022, the Institute was transferred to the management of UTM, after previously belonging to the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Immediately after the takeover, the UTM administration initiated the modernization process, aiming to align with international research and innovation standards.

Institute President Liliana Cepoi said that this transformation offers the academic community new perspectives.

“Today we mark a moment awaited with emotion and confidence. Our Institute is ready to meet the highest demands, attract young researchers, and develop projects with real impact on society,” explained Liliana Cepoi.

Through this modernization, the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology becomes one of the best-equipped research institutions in the country, being prepared to host international projects and collaborations to bring Moldova closer to the global network of innovation.
