National Contemporary Art Salon staged in Moldova: 85 visual artists present 85 works

The fourth edition of the National Contemporary Art Salon brings together 85 visual artists and an equal number of works created over the past two years. The exhibition presents the public with creations from more fields of visual art, from painting and graphic art to sculpture and decorative art, offering an overview of the development of the art scene in Moldova.

According to the organizer, Florina Breazu, the exhibition is now in its fourth edition and challenges artists to present their most representative creations.

“This is an exhibition now in its fourth edition, bringing together 85 works by 85 artists. The rules are the ones established by the regulations, which clearly stipulate that full members and trainee members of the Union of Fine Artists may participate, while the works must meet certain aesthetic and technical standards and have been created in the past two years. These were, for the most part, the criteria that guided the jury,” Florina Breazu said.

Visual artist Dumitru Bolboceanu believes that this year’s edition provides an opportunity to notice the development of artists and visual arts in the country, particularly by comparing the works presented from one edition to the next.

The artist also noted the presence of young creators who have moved from student status to that of trainee members of the Union of Fine Artists and are beginning to gain recognition for their work.

“Personally, I am happy to see that there are so many young artists who, just a few days ago, it seems, were still students at educational institutions, and today have become trainee members and are successful in their creative process. Some have even already won awards in these competitions. This competition covers all genres of art—we are talking about sculpture, graphic art, decorative art and painting—so that all fields are represented and the focus is not placed solely on painting or graphic art,” Dumitru Bolboceanu told MOLDPRES.

He noted that the exhibited works had gone through a preselection process, and that participation in the salon already represents recognition of the creators’ artistic level.

Another distinctive feature of the exhibition is the thematic freedom offered to participants. Dumitru Bolboceanu says that artists should not be restricted by an imposed theme, but should be given the opportunity to present their own concerns and experiences.

“The theme is open; each artist draws from their own creative process. We, the organizers, do not want to confine an artist’s creation. Why not give them the freedom to come with what troubles them internally, with what they think about, with the concerns they have when they enter the studio or begin a new canvas? Let us allow them to come before the public with what they feel. I have noticed that when a specific theme is proposed, some important artists do not accept the invitation. I prefer artists to bring works from their own creative output, without particular restrictions,” Dumitru Bolboceanu said.

Among the participants is Victoria Rocaciuc, a visual artist, painter and PhD in Arts, who presented the work “Breeze,” created using acrylic on canvas. Conceived in an abstract-associative style, the work conveys a state of nature and suggests the atmosphere of late autumn.

“It is one of my latest works from this year. It signifies a state of nature, perhaps also associated with the end of autumn, as I left a little green in it, while there is also an association with floral elements. At the same time, it concerns professional and compositional tasks in painting, the dynamic element of a motif that may be associated with the national landscape,” the artist told MOLDPRES.

Victoria Rocaciuc has taken part in exhibitions organized by the Union of Fine Artists since the 1990s. Her first participation was in 1992, when she was a student at the School of Arts. The artist believes that such events represent an opportunity for professional development and assessment.

“Experience is a process of professional development, growth and competition. You see your works alongside those of your colleagues, and this becomes an opportunity for analysis, introspection and progress in the field,” Victoria Rocaciuc stated.

The National Contemporary Art Salon aims to provide an optimal platform for presenting, recognizing and promoting artistic talent from the Republic of Moldova. By organizing an exhibition-competition, the event seeks to highlight the diversity and quality of contemporary visual art, encourage artistic excellence and create opportunities for dialogue among artists, art critics and the public.
