PM says direction clear: more competitive economy, more efficient state, Moldova increasingly prepared for European integration
The results of the government’s first 100 days in office today were presented by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan at a news conference. The PM highlighted the main measures aimed at developing the economy, attracting investments, modernizing infrastructure, improving the efficiency of public administration and accelerating the European integration.
“We have undertaken necessary reforms, even though some of them are unpopular, whether we are talking about public administration, taxation or the way public money is used. We want to change the way the state functions and turn decisions into concrete results for people. The assessment of the first 100 days is not about how many meetings we held or how many decisions we approved. First and foremost, it is about direction, responsibility, changing the pace and, above all, results,” Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said.
In the economy, industry grew by almost 7 per cent, exports of Moldovan products increased by almost 13 per cent and the average salary rose by 9.5 per cent in nominal terms. The prime minister noted that these developments were not yet sufficiently reflected in citizens’ incomes, while the cost of living remains high. To stimulate economic growth, the government has begun tax reform focused on reducing taxation on labor and investment and has eliminated unnecessary permits, generating estimated savings of 37 million lei for the business community. During the first 100 days, more than 100 discussions were held with potential investors, and approximately 7,000 people found employment with the support of the National Employment Agency (ANOFM).
Improving the efficiency of the state is another priority of the cabinet. An evaluation of the central administration and state-owned enterprises has been initiated to reduce bureaucratic spending and ensure the efficient use of public funds. At the same time, the government has advanced the reform of local public administration, including a proposal to reorganize the 32 districts into three regions—North, Centre and South—to strengthen their capacity for development and for attracting European funds. “We cannot ask the private sector to become more efficient, if the state itself remains unchanged,” the PM emphasized.
In terms of infrastructure, 88 km of national roads were completed, and feasibility studies were launched for 125 km of the future Ungheni–Chisinau highway. Through the European Village and Europe Is Near programmes, approximately 50 km of local roads, 28 km of sidewalks and 285 km of water supply networks were rehabilitated, while the budget for local infrastructure was increased by one billion lei.
In the energy sector, the full planned volumes of natural gas for the cold season have been secured. At the same time, electricity interconnection projects with Romania have advanced, including the Vulcanesti–Chisinau line, which is at the final stage.
Investments in people have focused on expanding healthcare services, modernizing educational institutions and strengthening social protection. Contracts worth more than 340 million lei were signed for the renovation and equipping of medical institutions, while in education, an investment programme worth 13.5 billion lei was approved for the next five years. The prime minister reaffirmed his commitment to continuing justice reform, strengthening defense capabilities and accelerating the process of accession to the European Union. Four of the six negotiation clusters have already been opened, and the government stays committed to its goal of provisionally concluding accession negotiations with the European Union by early 2028.
“The European Union is offering us a window of opportunity that Moldova has never had before: access to funding, access to the European market and unprecedented political support. We have partners who want to see us succeed, but no one will carry out the reforms instead of us, and no one can build Moldova instead of us. European integration is not just the work of a team of negotiators in Brussels. It means better roads, connectivity with Romania, access to water, healthcare services closer to home and better conditions for business development,” Prime Minister Vasile Tofan stressed.
In conclusion, Vasile Tofan emphasized that the first 100 days represented the beginning of a transformation process requiring continuity, discipline and responsible decisions: “The direction is clear: a more competitive economy, a more efficient state and a Moldova increasingly prepared for European integration.”
