PHOTO // Rare publications dedicated to Grigore Vieru donated to Parliament Library by poet’s son
Rare publications dedicated to the poet Grigore Vieru, including bibliophile volumes, postcards and audio recordings of the poet’s voice, have been added to the collection of the Parliament Library. The donation was made by Călin Vieru, the poet’s son, ahead of Romanian Language Day and in the context of the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Moldova, according to Parliament’s press service.
The collection brings together volumes with a distinctive editorial concept and graphic design, which preserve not only Grigore Vieru’s work, but also testimonies about his life, thinking and personality.
Among the most valuable items in the donation is the tribute volume “Grigore Vieru. Simple as the grass, simple as bread, simple as the Bible”, an anthology of poems and confessions conceived as an imaginary dialogue with the poet. The answers are constructed from verses, passages from his writings and confessions, as well as from testimonies and interventions published over time.
The edition also stands out for its bibliophile craftsmanship. The velvet cover is decorated with a raised porcelain representation of Grigore Vieru’s portrait, created by master Iurie Matei. Inside are poems, aphorisms, journalistic texts, photographs, facsimiles, portraits and musical scores, printed on watermarked paper with golden inserts.
Another volume, “Grigore Vieru. Treatise for the humanization of the wasteland”, gathers quotes, aphorisms, confessions and manuscripts by the poet, accompanied by reproductions of artworks. The book has a velvet cover, golden inscriptions and a handmade accessory in the shape of a “key of wisdom”.
The donation also includes postcards with portraits of the poet and images of his parental home.
“These precious items will find their place in the collection of the Parliament Library. It is a way in which we keep the memory of Grigore Vieru alive and pass it on to future generations. We thank you for your generosity and for this contribution to preserving our cultural heritage,” Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Tamara Gheorghița said.
Grigore Vieru was one of the important voices of the national revival and a supporter of the Romanian language and identity values. The poet was born in 1935 in the village of Pererâta, Briceni district. Mother, childhood, the parental home, the Romanian language and love of country are among the central themes of his work.
During the national revival, Grigore Vieru became actively involved in public life. He was a people’s deputy in the Supreme Soviet and one of the leaders of the Great National Assembly of 27 August 1989, at which national rights were demanded, including the return to the Latin script.
The publications donated to the Parliament Library were produced with the support of the “Regal d’Art” Cultural Association of Romania, which supports editorial and cultural projects dedicated to valorizing the work and memory of Grigore Vieru.
