VIDEO // EU Ambassador recites poem written by her daughter in Romanian

On Romanian Language Day, European Union Ambassador to Chișinău Iwona Piórko wished the citizens of the Republic of Moldova “Happy holiday!” and, for the first time, recited a poem in Romanian. It is the poem “Mother,” written by her daughter, Julia Piórko Bermig, and adapted into Romanian by writer and journalist Paula Erizanu.

“Mother tongue means family and roots, identity and emotion. It is one of the bonds that brings us closer to our loved ones, to the generations that preceded us and to those who come after us,” reads the message posted by the Delegation of the European Union.

The Republic of Moldova is celebrating Romanian Language Day on Monday, August 31. Officially named “Our Romanian Language” after the poem by Alexei Mateevici, the holiday has its origins in the period of the National Revival. In 1989, following pressure from tens of thousands of people gathered at the first Great National Assembly, the Romanian language was proclaimed the state language of the Moldavian SSR and the Latin script was reinstated.

On the 35th anniversary of Independence, the Republic of Moldova is at a decisive moment for its European future. In an interview to MOLDPRES, the EU Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Iwona Piórko, speaks about the next steps in the accession process and emphasizes that the Republic of Moldova is ready to move forward in opening the remaining negotiation clusters.
