Straseni–Gutinas power line at center of talks between Moldovan energy minister and new U.S. Ambassador
The construction of the 400 kV Straseni–Gutinas overhead power line, known as the Trump Liberty Line, and the modernization of the Straseni substation have been the main topics discussed by Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu and new Ambassador of the United States to Moldova Joseph Mark Burkhalter. The project benefits from a 130 million-dollars-worth financing commitment from the U.S. Government and aims to strengthen the country’s energy security.
According to the energy minister, the construction of the line will contribute to interconnecting Moldova with Romania and the European power system, diversifying electricity supply routes and reducing vulnerabilities in the national system.
“This strategic partnership benefits from a 130 million-dollar-worth financing commitment from the Government of the United States of America,” Dorin Junghietu said.
The minister noted that the Energy Ministry, together with Moldelectrica, the U.S. company Black & Veatch and the U.S. Embassy had recently launched a working group to implement the project.“The partnership with the United States means concrete investments in our energy independence and security. The new line will diversify electricity supply routes, reduce system vulnerabilities and contribute to a more secure supply for consumers,” the official said.
During the meeting, the two officials also discussed recent developments in the energy sector, as well as the measures needed to ensure energy security on both banks of the Dniester. Dorin Junghietu emphasized the importance of a secure and resilient energy system for the economic development of Moldova.
The energy minister thanked the U.S. ambassador for the support provided by the United States in overcoming energy crises and reforming and modernizing the sector, expressing confidence in continued cooperation to implement strategic projects.
The Straseni–Gutinas overhead power line is an energy infrastructure project meant to strengthen Moldova’s connections with Romania’s electricity grid and enhance the security of electricity supplies.
