Moldovan president revokes Moldova's citizenship from three individuals
President Maia Sandu today, October 29, 2026, signed the decrees revoking the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova from three individuals: Iurie Cara, Andrei Safonov and Serghei Verdes.
Iurie Cara and Andrei Safonov are members of the so-called legislature of the Tiraspol breakaway regime. They participated in adopting unconstitutional acts that violate the rights of Moldova’s citizens from the Transnistrian region, promote the ideology of the “Russian world,” and advocate maintaining Russia’s illegal military presence on the country’s territory.
Serghei Verdes got the citizenship in violation of the legal procedure, despite a negative opinion from the Intelligence and Security Service.
The procedure for revoking the citizenship was initiated by the Public Services Agency, based on the findings by the Intelligence and Security Service and pursuant to the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, which provides for the revocation of citizenship for committing particularly serious acts that harm the interests of the state, as well as for acquiring citizenship by circumventing legal provisions.
The authorities will continue to act in accordance with the law, in order to protect the constitutional order and the national interest.
