VIDEO // Moldovan parliament speaker says farmers need solutions, not politicians who speak on their behalf

Farmers need concrete solutions for the development of the agricultural sector, and the support provided to them must be reflected in results. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has made statements to this effect after the parliament voted to extend the licensing regime for imports of cereals and oilseeds until December 31, 2026.

The speaker noted that the measure aimed to protect domestic agricultural producers and support the marketing of Moldovan products. At the same time, he criticized the behavior of some opposition lawmakers during the parliamentary debates.

“Gentlemen, buzzing is no substitute for work and noise does not bring a harvest. Farmers need solutions, not politicians who speak on their behalf, but forget about the sector’s real problems,” Igor Grosu said.

The parliament speaker noted that the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry had presented three important initiatives for agricultural development, aimed at rehabilitating irrigation systems, modernizing farms and facilitating the access of domestic products to market.

The first initiative provides for investments of more than 63 million euros to rehabilitate irrigation systems. According to Grosu, the projects will serve approximately 6,900 hectares of agricultural land and around 300 farmers.

The second initiative is the Moldova’s Orchard II programme, for which 150 million euros in financing has been earmarked by the European Investment Bank. Total investments are estimated at 300 million euros and will be directed toward modernizing farms and developing agricultural products’ processing.

In addition, the IFAD 9 programme provides for the allocation of more than 43 million dollars for investments in farms, consulting services and improving the access of domestic products to market.

“Farmers need respect, support and results. They are the ones who truly work by the sweat of their brow and take care of this country,” Igor Grosu emphasized. He also said that, referring to some lawmakers: “If harvests came from words, they would be champions.”
