BUILDING MOLDOVA // Authorities accelerate preparations for construction of Chisinau bypass road
The Chisinau bypass road, which will comprise approximately 47 kilometers of four-lane road, is a strategic project aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the capital and facilitating road transit. The authorities are preparing to launch a tender for the construction of the bypass road’s second section, with the investment estimated at approximately 100 million euros. Deputy Prime Minister, Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Vladimir Bolea has unveiled data to this effect. The official today referred to more strategic projects at the Building Moldova event, dedicated to investments made through the Growth Plan for Moldova, supported by the EU.
According to the deputy PM, in 2022, the government completed and commissioned the first section of the Chisinau bypass road.
“At present, we are focusing on the second section, which starts from Ialoveni and extends to Sculeanca. It involves approximately 8.8 kilometers of four-lane road and requires a major investment. The feasibility study has been completed and we are now preparing the tender documentation for the launch of the tender for the second section. The investment is estimated at approximately 100 million euros, a sum that includes both land acquisition and the actual construction, including the construction of more bridges,” said Vladimir Bolea.
The deputy prime minister emphasized that the project was essential for the municipality of Chisinau, as the capital serves as a link between the northern and southern parts of Moldova.
“Those traveling toward the ports cross the capital area. Therefore, we must create the best and fastest access routes possible, without transport vehicles entering the city. In this way, we will reduce pressure on traffic in the capital,” he said.
Vladimir Bolea noted that the Chisinau bypass road project comprised six sections.
“On the coming period, most likely in November, we will have the feasibility study for the third section, which will extend from Sculeanca to the bridge at Cricova. Once we have the study and know the estimated costs, we will try to identify the necessary financial resources and launch the tenders. We want the second and third sections to enter the construction process simultaneously, so that we can avoid inconveniencing citizens and carry out the works in a single stage. Our goal is that, after these sections are completed and commissioned, we will address a significant part of the traffic problems both for those arriving in Chisinau and for the capital’s residents,” the official said.
In total, the Chisinau bypass road will comprise approximately 47 kilometers of four-lane road, meant to allow higher-speed travel and reduce the time spent in traffic jams.
“Beyond the discomfort and frustration caused by traffic jams, we must also take into account the financial losses incurred by economic operators. From the perspective of economic development, logistics is a fundamental component in the price formation in Moldova. In addition to such factors as productivity, logistics is of particular importance. If we do not develop the capital’s bypass road and do not build expressways, we will hinder economic development and generate losses for entrepreneurs of Moldova. They pay taxes, from which we subsequently build the state, pay pensions and finance other public services,” Vladimir Bolea concluded.
The Chisinau municipal bypass road is part of the national roads’ network and is meant to reduce transit traffic through the capital, particularly heavy goods vehicles. The project is structured into six sections and aims to modernize road infrastructure, improve traffic safety and reduce pollution in the municipality.
