VIDEO // Moldovan PM says Energocom company bought two million cubic meters of gas from Ukraine at price lower than on spot market
Moldova has successfully tested the mechanism for purchasing natural gas from the Ukrainian market, buying the first two million cubic meters at a price lower than that on the European TTF spot market. This might lead to lower tariffs for consumers. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan today made statements to this effect. He said that Energocom had gained access to the Ukrainian exchange and that the authorities were now negotiating to secure larger volumes at advantageous prices.
The PM presented the result after being questioned by the press during the Building Moldova event. He noted that access to the Ukrainian market had been got in a short time after private producers in the neighboring country were granted the right to export natural gas.
“There are two types of suppliers in Ukraine: private suppliers and state suppliers. Private suppliers were given the right to sell gas on the free export market, and, in a very short time, we connected Energocom to the Ukrainian exchange, so that we could purchase gas there. I can tell you that we have already contracted the first two million cubic meters at a price below today’s spot price, that is, below the TTF price,” Vasile Tofan said.
According to the prime minister, the relevant institutions are now negotiating to find larger volumes on the Ukrainian market at advantageous prices, making it possible to reduce tariffs.
The PM said that the first batch had been primarily intended to test how the mechanism worked and whether gas could be obtained at a price lower than the one stipulated in previously concluded contracts.
“These are small volumes, amounting to two million cubic meters, but we wanted to test whether we could purchase cheaper gas from Ukraine. The mechanism worked, and we saved money,” the prime minister stated.
Vasile Tofan emphasized that the next stage involved expanding purchases from the Ukrainian market and identifying offers that would allow supply costs to be reduced.
According to him, the authorities are negotiating to identify additional volumes at advantageous prices. The possibility of buying cheaper gas depends, however, on the offers available on the market and on the commercial terms agreed with suppliers.
Purchases from Ukraine represent an additional alternative for diversifying Moldova’s sources of supply, given that most of the gas needed for the cold season has already been contracted.
Ukraine has both the state-owned company Naftogaz and private natural gas producers. According to information presented by Moldovan authorities, Ukraine produced almost 17 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2025.
Private producers in the neighboring country have been recently were allowed to resume exports under controlled conditions. During March 1-November 30, they may sell abroad up to 15 per cent of the volume of gas delivered into the transmission system in the previous month.
The government aims to diversify supply sources and secure more favorable contractual terms, amid rising prices on international markets.
