Impact of April frosts on orchards analyzed by MAIA and Moldova Fruct Association
Impact of April frosts on the orchards in the Republic of Moldova was analyzed during a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) and representatives of Moldova Fruct Association.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry announced that the stage of receiving official confirmations regarding the areas affected by frosts is currently underway.
“The Ministry is under receiving official confirmations. They will be available by the end of this week. The need for repeat assessments due to the frosts on April 27–28 has required continuous mobilization from local authorities and regional agricultural departments, who intervened in the field to evaluate the situations,” said Daniela Braga, head of the MAIA Press Service.
According to Moldova Fruct Association, the two waves of frosts in April have caused massive losses in orchards of cherry, apricot, plum, peach, sour cherry, apple, pear, and table grape plantations, and “the costs for maintaining the orchards in 2025 and the costs that will not be covered by this year’s yield are estimated at 741 million lei.”
The institution said “the impact of the phenomenon risks reducing farmers' incomes, due to the loss of production capacities, adversely affecting fruit exports and threatening the development of rural communities.”
Moldova Fruct requested the completion of the damage assessment caused by frosts and the granting of compensations to affected fruit producers, payment of contributions by AIPA for subsidized insurance of the orchards, and the inclusion of concrete support measures for agriculture in the Reform Agenda of the Republic of Moldova's Growth Plan 2025–2027.
MAIA assured that in the next two weeks, measures will be analyzed and undertaken to mitigate the impact of the bad weather.
