Six tons of sorghum seeds distributed free to 280 farmers to boost resilience in challenging climate conditions

280 small farmers from 21 districts of the Republic of Moldova received six tons of sorghum seeds for free. The support was provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the support of the Government of Japan.

Thus, the sorghum seed material for grains or silage will be used by the 280 farmers to cultivate up to 8 hectares of land in the districts of Cahul, Comrat, Basarabeasca, Ștefan Vodă, Căușeni, Hâncești, Leova, Cimișlia, Criuleni, Orhei, Rezina, Telenești, Călărași, Sângerei, Ungheni, Șoldănești, Florești, Drochia, Fălești, Glodeni, and Râșcani. The total value of the seeds distributed at this stage is about 3,500,000 lei.

The project aims to increase the resilience of farmers to challenging climate conditions. Sorghum was specifically selected because it is a drought-resistant crop that can provide both high-nutritional value animal feed and a source of income for farmers.

The project, with a total value of 560,000 dollars, will run until March 2026. It aims to help over 1,000 farmers (approximately 700 in the livestock sector and 400 in the plant sector) adopt climate-smart agricultural practices, diversify their agricultural production by introducing drought-resistant sorghum, and ensure high-quality fodder for animals.
