Moldova’s agricultural sector to benefit from new 150-million-euros financing programme
Moldova will benefit from a new 150-million-euros financing programme from the European Investment Bank (EIB), aimed at the modernization and development of the agri-food sector. The financing contract for the implementation of the Fruit Garden of Moldova II project was ratified and presented by Secretary General of the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry Sergiu Gherciu at the plenary meeting.
According to the official, the draft law on the ratification of the Financing Contract between Moldova and the EIB, signed in Chișinău on June 29, 2026, provides for the granting of a preferential loan of 150 million euros, meant to strengthen the competitiveness of the agri-food sector.
“The purpose of the contract is the providing by the European Investment Bank of a preferential loan of 150 million euros to Moldova, intended for the modernization and strengthening of the agri-food sector,” Sergiu Gherciu said at the parliament meeting.
The state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry specified that most of the funds would be directed to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises of the agro-industrial sector.
“The resources will be directed to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the agro-industrial sector, namely in horticulture, viticulture, livestock farming, cereals’ cultivation, aquaculture, processing, digitalization and irrigation,” Gherciu noted.
At the same time, part of the financing will be allocated to public investments in research and education infrastructure for the agri-food sector, as well as to strengthening public services in the field.
According to the representative of the Agriculture Ministry, the project’s implementation period is estimated for 2026–2031 and the full repayment of the loan is planned for 2043.
According to Sergiu Gherciu, the loan provided by the EIB will generate total investments of over 300 million euros, including through the contribution of end beneficiaries.
The official emphasized that the program would contribute to the modernization of agri-food infrastructure, the increase of exports of value-added products, the development of businesses in rural areas and the creation of jobs.
The financing contract between Moldova and the European Investment Bank for the implementation of the Fruit Garden of Moldova II project was signed in Chișinău on June 29, 2026. The Fruit Garden of Moldova II project is included in the list of investment projects under the Reform and Growth Mechanism for Moldova, which will be implemented through the Neighbourhood Investment Platform.
