Former head of Savings Bank of Moldova sentenced to 13 years in prison
The former president of the Savings Bank of Moldova (Banca de Economii a Moldovei, BEM), Grigore Gacikevici, has been sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment in a semi-closed type penitentiary in a case connected to the Bank Fraud file. The sentence today was delivered by judge Ana Cucerescu of the Chisinau Court.
The sentence was announced in the presence of Grigore Gacikevici, who on July 29 was detained by officers of the National Anticorruption Center (CNA).
The court found Grigore Gacikevici guilty of actions related to granting loans in violation of lending rules on the period when he headed the Savings Bank of Moldova, which allegedly caused damage of 3 billion lei.
Four other former members of BEM’s Credit Committee are also targeted in the same case – Ana Vitiu, Mihail Bejenari, Leonid Belibov, and Alexandru Mișov. Prosecutors asked for sentences of 13 years of imprisonment for each of them.
According to the prosecution, between 2005 and 2012, Grigore Gacikevici, together with the other members of the Credit Committee, allegedly granted loans to economic agents in violation of the bank’s internal rules and the principles of prudent banking.
Grigore Gacikevici is involved in more criminal cases related to his activity during the period when he headed BEM. The oldest case was sent to court in April 2013.
Gacikevici was previously detained in this case in 2015 and in March 2017. Also in 2017, the National Anticorruption Center said that he was suspected of violating lending rules, an offense for which he faced up to seven years in prison.
