New renewable energy production record

The Republic of Moldova has achieved a new record in renewable energy production. On 14 April its share was 36%. Thus, during midday hours on certain days, there is an excess of electricity produced from renewable sources.

“During midday hours on certain days, we register an excess of electricity produced from renewable sources. The most recent record of renewable energy share was on April 14, 2025 - the share was 36%! The previous record was 29% on March 18, 2025,” State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Constantin Borosan said.

The official said that one solution for using the excess electricity from renewable sources would be charging electric vehicles, the number of which has increased in recent years.

“We have 6,612 electric cars, along with tens of thousands of plug-in hybrid vehicles. The capacity of a battery is at least 50 kWh, on average 80 kWh. The power of the charger is at least 7 kW. The most common are Type 2 of 14 kW. With good business organization representing electric vehicle charging stations and associations of renewable energy producers, all the excess electricity can be easily used in charging electric vehicles. With efficient energy management, we can fully harness the power of nature,” said Borosan.

According to statistics, the capacity for renewable energy production has increased eightfold in the last four years, reaching nearly 650 MW. This means that now, on days with favorable weather conditions, up to 30% of the energy consumed in Moldova comes from renewable sources, a goal previously set for 2030. For comparison, in 2020, only 3% of consumption came from green energy.
