VIDEO // Romanian investments in Moldova created 12,000 jobs

Romanian companies investing in the Republic of Moldova have created about 12,000 jobs, while trade between the two countries is approaching €4.5 billion. The figures were presented today by Romanian Prime Minister Luca Niculescu during a meeting with representatives of Romanian companies carrying out investment projects in the Republic of Moldova, as part of his first foreign visit since taking office.

He praised the contribution of Romanian investors to the development of Moldova’s economy and the strengthening of bilateral relations. He said that their activities have not only an economic dimension, but also a strategic one for relations between the two countries.

“I learned that our trade amounts to almost four and a half billion euros. This is a figure we do not have with very many countries. [...] I learned that you have created 12,000 jobs,” said Luca Niculescu, thanking the entrepreneurs for their work in the Republic of Moldova.

The Romanian prime minister assured companies investing in the Moldovan market that they would continue to receive support from the government in Bucharest. According to him, the authorities aim to maintain their support for existing projects and encourage the expansion of Romanian investments abroad.

“I want to assure you that you will have the support of the Romanian Government. [...] We want to remain equally strong and committed supporters of your projects and, at the same time, to expand them,” Niculescu said.

During the discussions, the official also presented several of the new Romanian Government’s economic priorities, including relaunching the economy, attracting investment and supporting Romanian companies seeking to develop in foreign markets. He stressed that predictability and stability are essential for attracting investors.

Referring to Romania’s fiscal policy, Luca Niculescu said that the government’s objective is not to increase taxes and duties, but to improve the collection of budget revenues and use public funds more efficiently.

“For us, fiscal consolidation does not necessarily mean increasing taxes; it means stopping waste and spending public money more effectively. [...] It means predictability, and this is extremely important when you want to attract an investor,” the prime minister said.

Luca Niculescu also said that he wanted to hear directly from company representatives about their concerns and plans in the Republic of Moldova in order to identify ways in which the Romanian authorities could support their activities.

The visit to Chișinău is the Romanian prime minister’s first foreign trip since taking office on October 20.

Niculescu is paying first official visit to the Republic of Moldova today, October 27. He will be received by President Maia Sandu and will meet with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Speaker Igor Grosu.
