Moldova might start importing gas from Neptun Deep field as of next autumn

Moldova might start importing natural gas from the Neptun Deep field in the Black Sea next autumn, when the new gas year begins. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan today made statements to this effect, during a joint news conference with his Romanian counterpart, Luca Niculescu.

According to the cited source, the development of the Neptun Deep field will have a significant impact on the regional natural gas market. The project is expected to double Romania's annual gas production, which currently stands at approximately eight billion cubic meters.

The prime minister said that Moldova had managed to allocate a significant volume of gas from this project for domestic consumption, which is expected to benefit consumers.

“This is gas that is closer to our country, which means lower transportation costs, making it a beneficial partnership both for the supplier and for the citizens of Moldova,” Vasile Tofan said.

According to the information available to the authorities, the project is scheduled to begin production next summer. Thus, natural gas deliveries from the Black Sea to Moldova might begin in the autumn, with the start of the new gas year.

Neptun Deep is one of Romania's most important natural gas development projects. The project is developed in the Romanian sector of the Black Sea by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, with the first gas deliveries to the national transmission system estimated for the first half of 2027.

The field is located approximately 160 km offshore in the Romanian sector of the Black Sea. The infrastructure includes ten production wells, subsea facilities, an offshore platform and a pipeline to shore at Tuzla.
