President visits Vulcănești–Chișinău line construction site
President Maia Sandu visited today the construction site of Vulcănești–Chișinău overhead power line. This is set to become operational by the end of the year.
Maia Sandu emphasized that this is one of the most significant energy projects initiated since independence.
“Today, I visited the construction site of Vulcănești–Chișinău overhead power line. Once completed, this line will significantly enhance our country’s energy security and protect us from the blackmail we have been subjected to for three decades. The line needs to be operational by the end of this year,” Maia Sandu said.
According to the work plan, the line will be completed and connected to the ÎS Moldelectrica infrastructure through Vulcănești power station and Chișinău power station by the end of the year.
The 400 kV Overhead Power Line will span a length of 157 kilometers. Thus, over 500 pylons and 1,500 kilometers of conductors will establish a strategic link between the south and center by intersecting eight districts and 35 localities. Depending on the power system regime, the line will be able to ensure the transit of a flow of up to 630 MVA of power, which could satisfy the need for 50% of energy consumption during peak demand periods.
The construction works of Vulcănești-Chișinău line began in April 2024 and are part of the Power System Development Project, financed by the World Bank Group. The project's value is 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros are allocated for the construction of the line.
The construction of Vulcănești-Chișinău power line is a project of strategic importance for our country's energy security. The new power line will facilitate the transport of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chișinău without passing through the Moldovan power plant, located in the Transnistrian region.
