Works on Ungheni-based road bridge between Moldova and Romania progress

The construction works on the Flower Bridge at Ungheni, the first road bridge between Romania and Moldova in the last six decades, are progressing according to plan on both banks of the Prut River. The head of the Iasi County Council, Costel Alexe, has made statements to this effect. He emphasized the strategic and symbolic importance of this project for bringing the two countries closer.

‘’In last April, we laid the foundation stone of the first bridge built between Romania and Moldova in the last six decades, and I am pleased to see that our common dream of decades is becoming a reality, step by step,’’ Alexe declared.

The bridge is part of the A8 Highway project – Targu Mureș – Iasi – Ungheni – state border – and will ensure the interconnection of road infrastructures between the two countries. On the territory of Moldova, the bridge will be connected to the national road R1 Chișinău – Ungheni – border with Romania.

The investment is funded by non-reimbursable European funds, through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), with a total value of over 156 million lei, excluding VAT.

‘’The bridge at Ungheni is the tangible beginning of a common way – the European way,’’ the head of the Iasi County Council.

On April 26, 2025, the construction of the road bridge across the Prut River at Ungheni, symbolically called the 'Flower Bridge,' was launched. It will have a total length of 261.2 meters (130.6 meters on the Romanian side), two lanes in each direction, pedestrian sidewalks, parking areas and spaces for customs control.

The project is part of the Union Highway (A8) and will connect Chisinau to the European transport network. The works will last 24 months (6 months design, 18 months execution), and provisional traffic might start in the autumn of 2026. The investment is funded with over 151 million lei through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The bridge will strengthen economic, road and symbolic connections between the two countries.
