President Maia Sandu today participated, alongside Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun, in an event dedicated to the promotion and protection of the Gagauz language in preschool education institutions.

In the context of the Gagauz language being included by UNESCO in the list of endangered languages, the head of state emphasized the importance of concrete actions for its preservation and transmission to new generations. “Today in Comrat, alongside Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun, we discussed with a group of educators how we can improve the teaching of the Gagauz language in the autonomous institutions. During the discussion, a new training programme for teachers who teach the Gagauz language in kindergartens was also announced,” said President Maia Sandu.

The programme will contribute to strengthening the pedagogical and linguistic competencies of educators, in order to ensure effective teaching of the mother tongue.

The event took place at the Mihai Eminescu Theoretical Lyceum of Comrat – the only high school where subjects are taught in the Romanian of the city, which hosts over 500 students. The institution serves as an example of a modern school, with infrastructure and facilities at European standards, following an overall investment of about 29 million lei – of which 18 million lei was provided by the Romanian government and 11 million - by the cabinet of Moldova.

Thanks to this initiative, teachers who teach Gagauz in kindergartens of the region will have the opportunity to develop their teaching and communication skills in the mother tongue over a period of three months. The courses are organized by the Gagauzia Scientific Research Center M. V. Marunevici, and at their conclusion, participants will be tested and will receive graduation certificates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research.
